Success was also achieved on the baseball diamond, where the Yellowjackets captured their third GNAC regular-season title in the last four years and broke the school record for wins in a season with 33.
Off the field, it was another record-breaking year in the community engagement realm, as Yellowjacket student-athletes logged more than 1,700 hours of community service activities.
Montague oversaw the completion of a seven-year partnership renewal with Avitus Group Stadium, securing the naming rights of MSUB’s softball field through 2024. The annual Yellowjacket Athletics Scholarship Dinner Auction was a success yet again, raising $61,000 to be contributed towards scholarships for student-athletes.
Montague also completed her second year as the chair of the NCAA D2 West Region Women’s Basketball Regional Advisory Committee, which included service on the national basketball ranking committee as well.
Under Montague’s leadership in 2017-18, the athletic department posted an overall grade point average of 3.11, which is among the highest in program history. MSUB’s baseball, women’s golf, and women’s basketball team all earned the GNAC Academic All-Sport titles for the 2016-17 year.
The Yellowjackets also announced securing hosting rights for the 2018 and 2020 NCAA Division II West Region Cross Country Championships.
In 2015-16, Montague led the athletic department to another successful year on the playing field and in the classroom, as the student-athlete cumulative grade point average surpassed 3.10 and 48 individuals earned academic all-conference honors. Women’s golf and baseball each earned the 2015-16 GNAC all-academic titles as well. Women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and baseball each earned a berth into their respective GNAC tournaments. Baseball claimed the program’s second regular-season GNAC title, and women’s basketball made an appearance at the NCAA DII West Region Tournament hosted by Azusa Pacific. Head coach Kevin Woodin was named the 2015-16 GNAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Women’s Track & Field saw the program’s first All-American as well. Along with academic and athletic excellence, under Montague’s leadership, the department accumulated over 1,400 hours of community service.

In Montague’s tenure, MSUB has successfully secured hosting rights of several marquee championship events for the first time ever, including the 2014 NCAA west regional cross country championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. MSUB also hosted the GNAC Baseball Championships for the first time in 2015. MSUB and Montague also continue to lead the Desert Stinger softball tournament each year, in which 24 NCAA DII teams meet in Las Vegas to compete in February.
In 2015 MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title. The 2014 season saw the MSUB women’s basketball team win the GNAC regular-season title and advance to the NCAA DII West region championship game in Pomona, Calif.
While managing fundraising efforts, Montague has procured significant gifts for numerous projects and athletic scholarships, including a partnership between MSUB softball and Avitus Group, resulting in the naming of the softball field as Avitus Group Stadium. She has also been successful in negotiating a strength and conditioning program for all student-athletes through a partnership with Granite Health and Fitness, as well as worked with recreation activities to expand and improve the weight room and fitness center at MSUB.
Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of Senior Woman Administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA DII compliance for each of the sports and co-ed cheer, as well as serving as a crucial member of the athletics senior administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics.
Montague, a native of Hysham, Mont., received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letter winner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. Her teams won the Pacific West Conference championship three out of four years and she participated in the NCAA DII west region women’s basketball tournament all four years. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program’s first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball.
Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and Women Leaders in College Sports, as well as various other state and local organizations. She is in the midst of serving a four-year term on the NCAA women’s basketball national committee and is the chair of the NCAA D2 west region women’s basketball committee through 2020.
She served as a mentor for the NCAA Athletic Directors Association Mentor Program in 2016-17. In 2011-12, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA DII Softball West Regional Advisory Committee from 2008-2011. Additionally, she served on the NCAA Division II Volleyball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2015. Montague is a member of the Billings Downtown Exchange Club.
Before joining the MSU Billings athletics staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic.
Montague recently completed a master’s degree in public relations at MSU Billings.
